About Us
Who Is The West End Church Of Christ?
While at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus told His disciples “…I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). The Lord accomplished this mission (John 17:4) and purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28).
The West End church of Christ is made up of people that have been purchased by the blood of the Son of God. We belong to Christ – that is, we are Christians (I Corinthians 6:19-20; Acts 11:26). Jesus Christ is our Savior and head (Ephesians 5:25) and we live to glorify Him.
Any church that claims to belong to Jesus Christ should be the same as the church He built and we read about in the New Testament. The Bible is our only guide and all we need to be pleasing to God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3). We simply follow the pattern described in the New Testament. Therefore, we are the church that Jesus built.
Who Can Be A Member Of Jesus Christ’s Church?
Jesus said “I…will draw all peoples to myself” (John 12:32). Jesus also told His apostles to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19) and to “preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15). Therefore, whoever you are – wherever you are from – YOU can be a member of the church that Jesus built.
How Can I Become A Member Of Christ’s Church?
Since God wants “all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:4) He chose to “draw all peoples” to Himself through the teaching of the gospel of Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16). The gospel of Christ is the power of God to save all men from their sins (Romans 1:16).
The New Testament teaches that one must believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God (John 3:16; 20:30-31). In order to have such faith one needs to hear the gospel taught (Roman 10:14-17). After hearing the gospel and believing with “all of your heart” (Acts 8:37) one must repent of (turn away from) your sins (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38; 17:30-31). Then one must confess with their mouth that Jesus is the Son of God (Romans 10:9-10) and then be baptized for the forgiveness of sin (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16). When a person obeys the gospel of Christ, God adds them to the church (Acts 2:47; cf. I Corinthians 12:13).
What Is The Purpose Of Christ’s Church?
Evangelism
New Testament Christians “went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). The apostle Paul taught that the church is “the pillar and support of the truth” (I Timothy 3:15). Therefore, the primary goal of the West End church is to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ to “all men” (I Timothy 2:4). We accomplish this goal by having preaching services, bible classes for all ages, supporting local and distant preachers.
Worship
The New Testament church worshiped (Acts 2:42). The worship assemblies at the West End church are patterned after New Testament teaching and is therefore simple, spiritual and orderly.
The Lord’s Supper. Our Lord commanded us to eat the memorial of unleavened bread and fruit of the vine each first day of the week to remember Jesus’ death (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 11:23-26).
Singing. The New Testament commands congregational singing without the use of any mechanical instruments of music (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
Prayer. Each service there is time taken to approach our heavenly Father in prayer (Acts 2:42; I Thessalonians 5:17).
Contribution. New Testament churches were commanded to give of their means for the work of the church (I Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
Edification
The New Testament church assembled together to encourage and build up each other (Acts 2:42; 9:31). Paul taught the first century churches to use God’s word as the means to build up the church (Acts 20:32). All the preaching and teaching done at West End church is for the purpose of helping folks go to heaven.
Benevolence
The New Testament church took care of its own members when there was a material need (Acts 2:44-45). The Christians at West End church fulfill that same responsibility to or for each member. We care for those of the church who are in need, both here in Bowling Green and other parts of the world (2 Corinthians 8:1-5). As Christians we also have individual responsibilities to help anyone who might be in need (Galatians 6:10; James 1:27).
